The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Otiko Afisah Djaba, on Sunday 17th June visited Sepe-Buokrom in the Ashanti Region to interact with Head porters (Kayayei) and their leaders on their welfare and inspect a Hostel Facility for them.

Her visit follows the pledge made by the NPP prior to the 2016 elections of providing hostel facilities for Kayayei who sleep on the streets at the mercy of the weather. Based on the campaign promise by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection has secured a hostel that can accommodate 2000 Kayayei in the Ashanti Region. The Hostel facility includes Creche, Reform Centre and Skill Training Centre.

After inspecting the hotel facility, Hon. Otiko also had a meeting with the Leaders of the Kayayei in the Ashanti Region at the Georgia Hotel. The meeting was to brief the Leaders on government commitment to ending Kayayei in the next 5 years.

The Leaders of the Kayayei welcomed the idea and pledged their full support to the Minister to end Kayayei in the next 5 years. The Minister lamented that after 61years of Independence, some people out of extreme poverty work as human donkeys and however assured providing vocational skills to the Kayayei and start-ups to improve upon their standard of living.
