IMPORTANCE OF ILLUSTRATIONS IN CHILDREN’S BOOKS

International Board for Books for the Young (IBBY) an organization that promotes the joy of reading and literacy among children all over the world is holding their 5th Regional Conference and IBBY Ghana Meshack Asare Prize in Accra under the theme ‘The Importance of Illustrations in Children’s Books from Thursday 29th August, 2019 to 1st September, 2019.

The purpose of the conference is to discuss the importance of illustrations in children’s picture books and improve on their illustrations. The IBBY Ghana Meshack Asare prize is also instituted in honour of Meshack Asare in appreciation of his great contribution to children’s literature and to encourage young illustrators to produce good illustrations in children’s books. The prize is sponsored by sub-Saharan Publishers, to be awarded every two years to the illustrator of the best children’s picture book published in Ghana.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Cynthia Mamle Morrison – who was the Guest of Honour – said pictures speak volumes especially for children and that words do not mean much to them. She added that pictures stick forever and being someone who works with children as a Minister and outside her Ministerial role as a Proprietor she strongly applauds the organizers for this laudable initiative.

She again said her Ministry is implementing several programmes across sectors to promote, protect the wellbeing of children and safeguard their optimal development. According to Mrs. Morrison her Ministry is also collaborating with partners to help in the implementation of a Child Protection System Strengthening programme which includes legal and policy review, behavioral change and Advocacy Programmes, Institutional Strengthening and mainstreaming of child protection issues across sectors.

His Excellency Shi Ting Wang, Chinese Ambassador to Ghana in his address also added that accessible, affordable and high-quality children literature, plays an effective role in bridging the cognitive gap between different cultures, increasing people to people exchange, safeguarding world peace and forging a common community with shared future for mankind.
